    Fireside chat discussion...

This will be a discussion on the role played by trail running and creative storytelling in orienting us in a time of increasing climate instability and political uncertainty. Our focus will be on how effective stories--and the diverse voices needed to tell them--function as tools of resilience and place-belonging. Topics covered will include effective story craft, environmentalism's major blindspots, and mapping out ways to "come home" to our damaged yet wild and impossibly beautiful planet.

    Hall Newbegin

    Juniper Ridge, Field Lab Workshop

Hall Newbegin is the founder and "chief wilderness freak" at Juniper Ridge. He has been in the business of wildcrafting plants and creating steam distilled fragrances for natural home and body care for over two decades. His has classical training as an herbalist, and is a naturalist in his own right. He loves taking people into the wild and getting them to engage their animal senses to connect to nature. He started Juniper Ridge because he loves connecting people to nature and was seeking a way to recreate the smells of a particular place. The goal of Juniper Ridge is to bring nature home to you. Committed to wilderness preservation, Juniper Ridge donates 10% profits annually to conservation efforts.

Hall will lead a hike where participants learn about native plants and local ecology and be encouraged to tune their sense into their surroundings. He has been known to have folks lying face down in the dirt, quieting their minds and tapping into their sense of smell, one of our primary ways of connecting to place. Each person will bring back a handful of plants for the still, a mobile distillation unit that steam distills plant matter and turns it into hydrosol. Everyone will take home their own bottle of hydrosol, aka, wilderness perfume, an olfactory snapshot of that place, in that season, in that time.

We will engage in a writing exercise, a route planning exercise, and answer safety and route-planning questions.

Using the camera-less image making process of cyanotype, we’ll harness the power of sun, water, and light-sensitive materials to make our own handmade prints. This truly unplugged photography process will highlight the power of simple compositions and the use of natural materials found in the landscape. Retreat goers will use the surrounding flora and fauna among other found objects to create their own images in that famous Prussian blue. Step by step, we’ll learn how to create light sensitive paper, including mixing chemistry and coating, as well as how to expose the paper properly and ensure the lifespan of the images.
